Therapeutic Pain Management Counseling

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for pain management, delivered in conjunction with other pain therapies, has been shown to improve one’s ability to cope with chronic pain. CBT involves a structured approach that focuses on the relationships among cognitions (or thoughts), emotions (or feelings), and behaviors. Some CBT strategies proven to aid in pain management are gentle exercise, pacing (breaking down jobs into small accomplishable tasks, relaxation (mindfulness, mediation, guided imagery, deep breathing), cognitive restructuring (replacing unhelpful thoughts with balanced thinking), and behavior activation (incorporating manful and soothing behaviors and activities to daily life). CBT for pain management accompaniment with a strong trusting therapeutic relationship that encourages clients to adopt an active, problem-solving approach to cope with the many challenges associated with chronic pain by utilizing self-care techniques on a daily basis.
